It is with great sadness that The Voice Newspaper reports the death of legendary reggae singer and actor Jimmy Cliff.

Earlier today, his wife announced his passing on social media. She wrote:
“It is with profound sadness that I share the news of the passing of my beloved husband, Jimmy Cliff. He crossed over this morning after suffering a seizure, followed by pneumonia.

“In this difficult time, I am deeply grateful for the support of his family, friends, fellow artists, and co-workers who walked alongside him throughout his journey. To his fans around the world, your love and encouragement were his strength, and he treasured every one of you.

“A heartfelt thank you goes to Dr. Couceyro and the entire medical team who provided exceptional care during this process. Jimmy, my darling, may you rest in peace. I will honor your wishes and carry your legacy forward.”

Born James Chambers on July 30, 1944, in St. James, Jamaica, Jimmy Cliff became a pioneering force in global music. He emerged as an award-winning singer, songwriter, and actor whose voice helped carry reggae across the world.

Cliff shaped the early foundations of ska, rocksteady, and reggae. As a result, his influence continues to inspire both artists and fans today.

He started writing songs while in primary school and scored his first local hit as a teenager. Soon after, he moved to Kingston and signed with Island Records in 1964. His first international album followed in 1967, marking the start of an extraordinary career.

However, his breakthrough came in 1972 when he starred in The Harder They Come. His portrayal of Ivan, a struggling musician, and the film’s soundtrack—featuring classics such as “Many Rivers to Cross,” “You Can Get It If You Really Want,” and the title track—introduced reggae to a global audience and changed music history.

Widely regarded as the Voice of Reggae, Cliff touched millions with hits like “Wonderful World, Beautiful People,” “Reggae Night,” “Hakuna Matata,” and his iconic cover of “I Can See Clearly Now” for the Cool Runnings soundtrack. His ability to blend reggae with pop and rock helped bridge cultures and bring Jamaican music to the mainstream.

Cliff earned two Grammy Awards and became the only living musician to hold Jamaica’s Order of Merit. In 2010, he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, further cementing his legendary status.

Beyond music, Cliff symbolized resilience and optimism. Later in life, he embraced spiritual exploration, converted to Islam, and took the name El Hadj Naïm Bachir. He described himself as having a “universal outlook on life,” viewing the world through unity, peace, and a belief in science over religion.

His final album, Refugees (2022), showed that his voice remained powerful and relevant. It explored themes of hope, unity, and perseverance.

Jimmy Cliff’s music and his message of peace, empowerment, and love will continue to echo through generations. Although the world has lost a true cultural icon, his spirit lives on in every melody he created.
