The Michigan Wolverines men’s basketball claimed the 2026 national championship with a 69–63 victory over the UConn Huskies men’s basketball at Lucas Oil Stadium. With this win, Michigan secured its first title since 1989 and ended UConn’s bid for a third championship in four years.

Cadeau Leads Michigan to Victory

Elliot Cadeau led the Wolverines with 19 points. He also played a key role in the closing minutes, as Michigan converted 25 of 28 free throws. As a result, the team pulled away late and maintained control under pressure.

Defensive Battle in the First Half

Both teams struggled offensively early in the game. Michigan missed its first eight three-point attempts and failed to establish rhythm. Meanwhile, UConn protected the paint effectively and disrupted scoring opportunities.

Although the Huskies shot 5-for-15 from beyond the arc, they relied on interior defense to stay competitive. Consequently, the first half remained tightly contested.

Second-Half Surge Turns the Game

Michigan finally broke through in the second half. Cadeau hit the team’s first three-pointer after an 0-for-11 start. That moment sparked momentum and pushed the Wolverines to an 11-point lead.

However, UConn responded with resilience. The Huskies cut the deficit to four with less than eight minutes remaining. Shortly after, a dunk by Aday Mara energized their bench and kept the game close.

Late Drama Falls Short for UConn

Despite the comeback effort, UConn could not complete the rally. A late three-pointer by Solo Ball reduced the margin to four with 37 seconds left.

Even so, Michigan held firm. After a missed opportunity from Alex Karaban, the Wolverines sealed the win at the free-throw line.

Karaban led UConn with 17 points, while Ball added 11. However, both teams struggled from long range, combining to shoot just 11-of-48 from three-point distance.

Injuries Impact Both Sides

Injuries affected key players throughout the game. Ball played through an ankle issue but still contributed from deep. Meanwhile, Yaxel Lendeborg, the Big Ten Player of the Year, battled knee and ankle injuries and finished 4-of-13 shooting.

Historic Win for Michigan

With the victory, Michigan completed a dominant 37–3 season. The win also ended the Big Ten’s long championship drought, marking the conference’s first men’s title since 2000.

In front of more than 70,000 fans, Michigan delivered a composed and resilient performance. Ultimately, the Wolverines combined clutch free-throw shooting, timely scoring, and strong defense to secure the national championship.
