Ryan Gosling Officially Joins the MCU as Ghost Rider, Marvel Confirms

Marvel Studios has confirmed that Ryan Gosling will play Ghost Rider in a new Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) film. The movie is scheduled to premiere in 2028.

The announcement was made during a surprise presentation at San Diego Comic-Con on Saturday. Fans welcomed the actor with loud applause when he appeared on stage.

Gosling said Ghost Rider is a role he has wanted to play for many years. He also admitted he could hardly believe the announcement was finally happening.

Surprise Reveal at San Diego Comic-Con

Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige opened the presentation by mentioning that fans had repeatedly asked when Gosling would join the MCU.

Moments later, the stage lights went dark. When they came back on, Gosling appeared before an excited crowd.

The three-time Oscar nominee thanked the audience for their support. He described Ghost Rider as one of his dream roles.

Earlier this year, Gosling revealed that he had been in discussions with Marvel. He shared the update during an interview on Josh Horowitz’s Happy Sad Confused podcast.

Ghost Rider Returns to the Big Screen

The upcoming film will be the third live-action Ghost Rider movie. It follows the 2007 film starring Nicolas Cage and its 2011 sequel, Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance.

Ghost Rider’s real identity is Johnny Blaze, a motorcycle stunt performer. He gains supernatural powers after making a deal with the demon Mephisto.

The agreement binds Blaze to the Spirit of Vengeance, Zarathos. As a result, he transforms into the iconic flaming anti-hero.

Shawn Levy to Direct the Film

The project will be directed by Shawn Levy. Gosling called Levy the only director he wanted for the movie.

Levy previously directed Deadpool & Wolverine. He is also working with Gosling on Star Wars: Starfighter, which is expected to debut next year.

The director told Comic-Con attendees that the Ghost Rider project grew from conversations during breaks on the Star Wars set.

According to Levy, the pair spent months discussing ideas for the character. Eventually, those conversations turned into a real movie.

“We kept building on Ryan’s vision,” Levy said. “At one point I simply told him, ‘Bro, let’s ride.'”

Ryan Reynolds Brings Deadpool to Comic-Con

Comic-Con also featured a surprise appearance by Ryan Reynolds.

The actor arrived wearing a gray version of Deadpool’s costume during a panel for Avengers: Doomsday.

Reynolds entertained the audience by joking with Marvel stars, including Robert Downey Jr. and Paul Rudd.

At one point, he asked when filming had started. Downey Jr. jokingly replied that the movie was already finished and asked whether Reynolds had bumped his head.

More Marvel Announcements

Marvel shared several other updates during the convention.

The studio confirmed that Black Panther 3 will arrive in 2028. Fans also received an exclusive preview of Avengers: Doomsday.

Outside the Marvel presentations, Johnny Depp made a special appearance. Rick Moranis also surprised fans by announcing a sequel to the 1987 comedy Spaceballs.
