Zoinks! “Scooby-Doo: Origins” Features the Franchise’s First-Ever Real Dog

Scooby Doo Real Dog First Look At Scooby Doo Origins Series Live Action

If you’ve been hunting for updates on Netflix’s upcoming live-action Scooby-Doo series, your search ends here.

A brand-new teaser for Scooby-Doo: Origins has arrived, introducing the titular pup—who makes history as the franchise’s very first real, live-action Scooby-Doo. The clip shows the floppy-eared canine sniffing around the woods before crossing paths with Shaggy Rogers (played by Tanner Hagen). By the end of the footage, viewers get a heartwarming first look at the real-life good boy sporting his signature teal collar while being cradled by his future best friend.

For over five decades, Scooby-Doo has reigned as a pop-culture phenomenon, generating three theatrical releases, over a dozen animated shows, and nearly 40 direct-to-video animated films. However, Scooby-Doo: Origins marks a major milestone by casting an actual dog in the iconic role for the first time. It certainly deserves a round of “a-paws!”

How Mystery Inc. Began

Setting the stage for its 2027 premiere, Scooby-Doo: Origins follows Shaggy and his longtime friend Daphne Blake (Mckenna Grace) during their final summer at camp. The duo unexpectedly finds themselves entangled in a chilling, supernatural murder mystery surrounding a lost, lonely Great Dane puppy who may have been the sole witness to the crime.

To crack the case, they team up with Velma Dinkley (Abby Ryder Fortson), a sharp and pragmatic local girl, and Fred Jones (Maxwell Jenkins), the eccentric but handsome new kid in town. Together, the teens dive into a terrifying nightmare that threatens to bring their deepest secrets to light. Based on the classic Hanna-Barbera cartoon, the series will explore the haunting investigation that initially brought this beloved group of meddling kids and their extraordinary dog together to form Mystery Inc.

Behind-the-Scenes Details

Adding more excitement to the lineup, Paul Walter Hauser has joined the cast in a currently unannounced role. Filming for the live-action project officially got underway this past April in Atlanta.

The series boasts a heavy-hitting team of executive producers, including:

  • Josh Appelbaum and Scott Rosenberg
  • Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter, and Leigh London Redman (for Berlanti Productions)
  • André Nemec, Jeff Pinkner, and Adrienne Erickson (for Midnight Radio)
  • Toby Haynes, who will also direct the series premiere.
